Worthing community help charity raise £3,000 at Summer Fayre

Over £3,000 has been raised for a Worthing veterans’ care home after it threw open its doors to the public for its Summer Fayre. Care for Veterans – a Royal Star & Garter Home held its popular annual event on Boundary Road on 4 July.  

The charity provides long-term nursing, rehabilitation, respite and end-of-life care to veterans and their families who live with disabilities, including acquired brain injury and degenerative neurological conditions. It is now part of the Royal Star & Garter group, following a merger with the charity in 2025.  

People of all ages joined residents and staff at the Home and helped raise £3,230. All proceeds will go towards the care and rehabilitation of veterans and their families.  

The Fayre included performances from school, community and British Sign Language signing choirs, plus Rochester Pipes and Drums marching band. Worthing Fire Station’s Red Watch was present with their fire engine and there was also a kung fu demonstration. Delicious food and drinks and a variety of market and craft stalls were available, as were traditional games such as hook-a-duck, spin the wheel, tombolas, Play Your Cards Right and bottle hoopla, which kept all the family entertained.  

VIPs attending included Worthing West MP Dr Beccy Cooper, West Sussex High Sheriff Gary Shipton, Worthing Mayor Lysanne Skinner and Worthing town crier Bob Smitherton.  

Among those with stalls at the fayre was metal wall art retailer Rusper and Pines. Owned by husband-and-wife team Kieran and Victoria, Rusper and Pines will be donating a percentage of sales on items sold from their Lest We Forget range of products to Care for Veterans this year.   

Vicky Strange is Home Manager at Care for Veterans. She said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for our Summer Fayre and helped make it such a wonderful success. The generosity, enthusiasm and support shown by those who attended is truly heartwarming, and every penny raised will go towards supporting the care and rehabilitation of our residents. We are so proud to be part of such a kind, caring and welcoming community, and it was a pleasure to open our doors and bring people together for a day of fun and friendship.”  

Care for Veterans has already started planning its Christmas Fayre. It will take place at the Home on 28 November.
