Care for Veterans will use the £25,000 award to provide physiotherapy, occupational, speech and language therapy, as well as other activities, to physically disabled ex-service personnel.
Based in Worthing, the charity’s amazing facilities provide 60 beds for residents who currently range in age from 36 to 101, the majority of whom have an Acquired Brain Injury or a life limiting condition such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and Parkinson’s.
James Bacharew, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Care for Veterans, said: “This grant will help to fund our rehabilitation services for ex-Armed Forces personnel with physical disabilities and complex needs.”
“Our comprehensive and tailored rehabilitation programme helps the veterans in our care to improve their quality of life and regain independence.”
Anyone who has served in the Armed Forces is eligible for admission at Care for Veterans, as well as their immediate family, and with no regular Government funding, grants like this Veterans’ Foundation award are essential in the current climate.
One of the veterans supported by Care for Veterans and the VF grant money is Steve, a former Warrant Officer in the Royal Engineers who suffered a severe brain injury in a motorcycle accident, which greatly affected his speech and left him paralysed on his left side.
Since Steve came to Care for Veterans in 2018, his communication, independence and quality of life have been greatly improved by the charity’s brilliant team.
Care for Veterans even made sure that Steve was able to keep in touch with friends and family through periods of lockdown by improving his computer skills, using e-mail and video calls to reduce isolation and loneliness.
“We are incredibly grateful for the Veterans’ Foundation’s generous support, especially in these difficult times exacerbated by the pandemic,” explained Andy Neaves, Chief Executive at Care for Veterans.
“Not only has it been a difficult time for our residents, but COVID has also had a major impact on the charity’s ability to raise income,” he added.
“Thank you to all at the Veterans’ Foundation and everyone who donates or plays the Veterans’ Lottery, which in turn makes their support for us possible.”
This grant is one of more than 290 grants given by the Veterans’ Foundation to UK-based military charities since inception in 2016 and it means that the Foundation have now given over £9.1 million to good causes in that time.
All of the grants are made possible by generous donors and the players of the Veterans’ Lottery, who not only support our veterans in need, but are also in with a chance to win £35,000 every month.
